Safety
With all of the changes taking place, total separation will be complete between the schools and the construction sites very soon. We ask that the schools remind their staff and students that the construction areas are off limits. Safety of all staff and students is priority one and is discussed with our workers during their orienations.

With the traffic pattern changes the CFD Station #19 and #24 along with Worthington Fire & EMS remind us that in the events of an emergency situation that exact instructions are given to the 911 operator on how emergency vehicles should enter the facility. This applied to both schools and the construction sites. For OSD's Neighbors:
As Superintendent of the Ohio School for the Deaf (OSD), I feel it is important to communicate with you about the new school and residence buildings being built on our campus.  By now, you have seen the arrival of heavy construction equipment and have noticed the removal of trees that are in the "footprint" of the new school and residence buildings.  Simultaneously, Columbus Gas Company has been clearing brush and scrub trees from the right-of-way over the path of their gas line that parallels the OSD/OSSB property line and in the reserve area.

The OSD Staff and students have been involved in a long process of designing the new school and residence buildings.  We at OSD are very excited about our new school and residence buildings for our current and future students! You can learn more about the Ohio School for the Deaf and the new facilities being built by visiting our web site:

www.ohioschoolforthedeaf.org

Another convenient way to keep you informed about our progress would be through e-mail updates.  If you would like to receive regular e-mail updates on our new construction, please send me an e-mail requesting that your name be added to that distribution list.  Please send an e-mail to Corbett@osd.oh.gov to be added to this list.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the building of our new facilities, feel free to send me an e-mail or to call me at 728-1556.

Sincerely,

Edward E. Corbett, Jr.
Superintendent

For OSSB's Neighbors:

As the Interim Superintendent of the Ohio State School for the Blind (OSSB), I feel it is
important to communicate with you about the new school project and residence buildings
being built on our campus. The school principal and I were given an opportunity to speak at
your April community association meeting to provide an update of the project.

You will soon see, if not already, the arrival of heavy construction equipment to begin the
process of removing trees that are in the "footprint" of the new school and residence
buildings. Simultaneously, Columbia Gas Company has been clearing brush and scrub trees
from the right-of-way over the path of their gas lines that parallels the OSD/OSSB property
line and in the reserve area.

The OSSB staff and students have been involved in a long process of designing the new

send me an e-mail requesting that your name be added to that distribution list.

Please send an e-mail to cjohnson@ossb.oh.gov to be added to this list.

OSD’s Site Logistics Plan/Notes/Instructions
are two sheets outlining the OSD Site Logistics Plan with notes for the forthcoming construction of the new academic and residential buildings. Please study both sheets.
(Posted 4/09/10)

Sheet 1 depicts the campus map with construction area; construction fence posted around the construction area; construction gates with trailers and parking for the workers; emergency vehicle access; new school bus drop-off and pick-up area; new event parking and additional parking areas. There is a legend on each sheet illustrating what is what – e.g., orange line meaning a 6’ chain link construction fence around the construction area will be put up.

Sheet 2 depicts the roadway access to both points (the construction area with parking area for the construction workers and construction trailers; and, the Harlow Vocational Wing area).

  • With the two sheets clearly delineated, access to OSD will be from Morse Road and Indianola Avenue. Construction workers will access the new academic and residential buildings from Morse Road entrance.
  • OSD staff members can enter OSD from Morse Road; however, that road is to be designated one way. There will be “One Way” signs placed along the route. Also, there will be speed limit posts along the route and the speed limit is strictly 10 mph.
  • OSD staff members can enter and exit from Indianola Avenue. The back road parallel to the ravine will be two-way with parking only on one side.
  • School busses and vans (or cars) will enter the Morse Road entrance and stop at the front entrance of the Administration Building to drop-off our students in the morning. In the afternoon, our students will be picked-up at the Harlow Vocational Wing (see boxed A on Sheet 1). The school busses/vans/cars will exit OSD at the Indianola Avenue.
  • Homegoing Fridays – the school busses/vans/cars will pick-up our students by the B-5 and B-6 dormitories (see boxed B on Sheet 1).
  • Staff, when entering or exiting OSD, must observe the school busses/vans/cars’ right of way when dropping-off and/or picking-up students.
  • Parts of the new roadways and parking spaces will be compacted limestone.
  • A new temporary compacted limestone access to the parking areas alongside the Administration Building from the old Maintenance garage that was torn down will be built for our staff use; however, this area for additional parking will be redone when school is out either this summer or next summer.
  • Parking along the northernmost driveway must be one sided to allow emergency vehicles (e.g., hook and ladder truck to navigate through). The same is true for commercial vehicles (e.g., 18-wheel trucks). There will be “No Parking” and “10 mph” signs posted along that driveway.

  • Any and all entry to OSSB (except construction) will be from Foster Avenue. Construction workers will access the new academic and residential buildings from the High Street entrance.
  • School busses, vans, and cars will enter from the Foster Avenue entrance, follow the drive to the left, continue behind the pool and the cottage, to a drop off point at the back of the building. You should access Foster Avenue from Lincoln Avenue (goes east or west) and in our back gate. (See attached street map.)

SIGNING OF SCHEMATIC DESIGN
(Updated December 15, 2008)

New Campus Information

On behalf of Dr. Ed Corbett and Ms. Cynthia Johnson, the superintendents of the Ohio School for the Deaf and the Ohio State School for the Blind, welcome to an exciting new chapter in the history of our venerable schools.

With the passage of the Fiscal 2007 - 2008 Ohio Capital Budget, the state identified $4 million for the planning and design of a new, combined campus for The Ohio School for the Deaf (OSD) and The Ohio State School for the Blind (OSSB).

It is important to note that the leadership of the two schools, in consultation with the State Department of Education, initiated this effort.  We are not being driven to this outcome, we are driving it.  The schools are looking to the future and want to ensure that our facilities will be available to serve Deaf, Blind, Visually Impaired, Hard-of Hearing, and multiply-handicapped students for many years to come.  This effort to build both schools on a combined campus will allow us to provide better services and support to our students, parents, and teachers with less distraction and greater efficiency than ever before.

You may have already begun to imagine some of the challenges and opportunities that we will face over the coming months and years.  We have a clear vision of where we have been, the schools each have over 170 years of history, and we have a lot of ideas about where we want to go.  We do not, however, have all the answers.  We don't want to limit our future to be just the best that we can imagine.  We want the future of our schools to be charted by the best and the brightest from all around the country.  Our students deserve nothing less.

This website is designed to keep all interested parties informed of our progress, and to allow a means of communicating documents, ideas, concerns, and opportunities to everyone in a timely manner.

What's New on the Site?

August 11 , 2008 - The newest floorplan sketches are available in the Design Section.

December 15, 2008 - Additional information (Status and Chronology) have been added to this site.
